The Regatta at Glencoe Boat Club
Glencoe Boat Club held its annual Regatta on Loch Leven for over 40 years. It has held many forms during this time but is always a fun and exciting couple of days, enjoyed by members, locals and visitors from far and wide.
Traditionally, it starts with an open race from Oban Bay to Glencoe for all comers on a Friday. This is always exciting with opportunities for all to excel in the open water of Loch Linnhe. Boats from many different Clubs and locations take part to form a large fleet.
This race culminates in a magnificent welcome Barbecue at the Glencoe Boat Club Clubhouse once all have finished!
Saturday races are usually for all comers in all classes of boat. If demand is high, we run dinghy races for the newly qualified juniors and anyone else fit enough, as well as two classes of keel boat, fast and not so fast!
There is a continuous sandwich and soup buffet running at the club throughout the day and the Club takes on a life of its own with so many visitors and friends present. The event finishes with a meal and Prize Giving at a local Hostelry.
What happened to the Regatta? 2020 and beyond
The impact of the COVID 19 Pandemic had a sad impact on our club. For the first time in over 40 years, the Regatta was cancelled. Since then it has been a challenge to reinstate the right swell of skills and support to resurrect it. 2024 saw a new direction, a new vision and new committee members stepping into to help. A three year plan, beginning with sailing musters in summer 2024 is underway. The vision to see a spectacular annual Regatta once more at Glencoe Boat Club from 2026 is being actively supported by members and RYA Scotland.
